What To Expect

When you visit First Baptist Rockville, you’ll find a friendly and diverse congregation. With people from roughly 30 different countries, ranging in age from 9 days to 90 years, you’re sure to find someone to relate to.

In preparation for your visit, we’ve pulled together some Frequently Asked Questions to hopefully address some things you may be wondering about. If we failed to address your questions below, feel free to contact the church office at 301-279-2400 and speak to our church administrator, Lindsay Folkerts.

FAQs:

What times are your services? On Sunday mornings, our schedule looks a bit like this:
o 8:15 Adult Bible Study (1 class)
o 9:30 Contemporary Worship, Adult and Children’s Growth Groups (Sunday School)
o 11:05 Tradition
al worship, Adult Growth Groups and Children’s Church

What is a service like?  We have the best of both worlds, so regardless if you tend toward the contemporary or the traditional, you should feel at home. At our 9:30 service, worship is led by a worship band. Most often, you'll hear us singing the songs of Chris Tomlin, Hillsong, Passion, and more. At the 11:05 service, we sing primarily hymns led by organ and piano with the occasional orchestral accompaniment. Our sanctuary choir typically opens this worship service.

How should I dress? In the contemporary service, you’ll find most people dressed comfortably. During the traditional service, you’ll find most people dressed up a bit more (suits, ties, dresses, etc.). All that to say, we don’t have a dress code. Feel free to come in a way that will help you worship God the best.

Will I be asked to give money? You will have an opportunity to give, but we don’t beg or cajole. Basically, we see giving as an act of worship. If you want to worship in that way, feel free, but not obligated.

What are the sermons like? You’re welcome to sample them at our media page. Pastor Schmidt preaches most of the time. He’s a teaching oriented pastor who wants to educate people in what the Bible says in a creative, yet logical way. He speaks directly and passionately.

What "flavor" of Baptist are you? We associate with the Southern Baptist Convention, Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware, and the Montgomery Baptist Association. As an autonomous church, our beliefs come from the Word of God.

Do you support missions? Yes, in a big way. Each year in March or April (depending on when Easter lands), we set aside an entire month to look at what God is doing around the world. Our missions budget is based on a percentage of our normal offerings as well as a “Faith Promise” of the congregation.

What activities are there for children on Sunday mornings? There are a variety of activities for children! For the youngest ones (new born to three year olds), you’ll find a nursery just to the right of the main doors as you enter the building. For the Pre-K through 5th grades, we have Children’s Sunday School during the first hour (9:30) and Children’s Church during the second hour (11:05).

Do you have a Sunday night service?  Yes and no.  We don't have a typical "service" but we do have a variety of classes and activities for all ages during the school year (Sept.-May).  If you want to know more, click here.

Can you give me a ride to church?  Unfortunately, we do not have a church van or bus to pick you up.  However, if you want to call the church office and let us know you need a ride, we'll do our best to find a church member in your area willing to pick you up.  The Rockville Metro is only a bus ride away and we suggest Metro Access for those with disabilities.
